Unlimited flat-rate cash back for small businesses with no annual fee.

#business#cash-back#no-annual-fee#rewards

A flat 1.5% cash back on everything, no annual fee, and no spending categories to track. For a lot of small businesses, that's the whole pitch and it works.

What the Spark Cash Select actually is

This is Capital One's no-annual-fee business cash back card built around one idea: earn the same rate on every purchase and stop thinking about it. The headline is unlimited 1.5% back on all spending, with elevated rates on a couple of specific buckets like hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. There's no quarterly category to activate and no caps to babysit.

Annual fee is $0. There's a sign-up bonus that comes and goes depending on the offer, usually a few hundred dollars after you hit a modest spend threshold in the first few months. Foreign transaction fees are also waived, which is rarer than it should be on a no-fee business card.

How it performs day to day

The appeal is the lack of friction. You swipe, you earn 1.5%, redemptions don't expire as long as the account is open. Owners consistently say the same thing: it's the card they stop thinking about, which is exactly what a flat-rate card should be. Cash back can be redeemed as a statement credit or check, in any amount, whenever you want.

Capital One's business reporting and account tools are solid if unremarkable. You get employee cards at no extra cost, each earning rewards on your account, and year-end summaries that make tax time less miserable. Nothing here is flashy. It just runs.

The catch: 1.5% is a floor, not a peak

Here's where the honesty kicks in. 1.5% is fine, but it's no longer the best flat rate around. Capital One's own Spark Cash Plus earns 2% on everything, and the Ink Business Unlimited from Chase matches 1.5% while plugging into the more valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards system if you also hold a points card. If you spend heavily, that half-percent gap adds up fast.

The other limitation: the boosted travel rates only apply when you book through Capital One Travel, which is a walled garden a lot of people won't bother with. If you book flights and hotels directly or through Google, those perks may as well not exist. Treat this as a flat 1.5% card and judge it on that.

Who it's for, who should skip it

Get it if you want a simple, free safety-net business card with no rewards math. Newer businesses, side hustles, and anyone who values one predictable rate over chasing categories will be happy. The no-foreign-transaction-fee perk also makes it a reasonable pick for buying from overseas suppliers.

Skip it if you spend enough to justify the Spark Cash Plus and its 2% rate, or if you already live in Chase or Amex points ecosystems where a sister card multiplies your value. Big spenders in specific categories like advertising, office supplies, or shipping will earn more with a category card such as the Ink Business Cash.

The verdict

The Spark Cash Select is a competent, boring, no-fee workhorse, and boring is a compliment here. It does the one job a flat-rate card should do and asks nothing in return. It just isn't the most rewarding card in its lane anymore.

Our take: it's a strong default for small or new businesses that want cash back without homework. If your annual spend runs into six figures, do the math on a 2% card first. For everyone else, this is an easy yes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Spark Cash Select for Business have an annual fee?
No. The annual fee is $0, and there are no foreign transaction fees either, which is unusual for a no-fee business card.
What's the difference between Spark Cash Select and Spark Cash Plus?
Spark Cash Select earns a flat 1.5% with no annual fee. Spark Cash Plus earns 2% on everything but carries an annual fee and works as a pay-in-full charge card. Heavy spenders usually come out ahead with Plus despite the fee.
How do you redeem the cash back?
You can redeem as a statement credit or a check, in any amount, at any time. Rewards don't expire while the account stays open, so there's no pressure to cash out on a schedule.
